In The Black Enigma, Albert Hayes reimagines the iconic serenity of the Mona Lisa through the gaze of an East Asian woman seated against a surreal, altered Renaissance backdrop. Behind her looms a towering black pyramid, silent, unyielding, and mysterious, its presence disrupting time and history. The juxtaposition of classical beauty with a monolithic symbol of ancient secrecy challenges the viewer to consider hidden truths, racial identity, and the timeless pursuit of understanding the unknown. Hayes’ fusion of cultural iconography and metaphysical symbolism invites reflection on what we perceive as legacy, and what may lie buried beneath it.
Albert Hayes (b. 1961, Chester, South Carolina) is a self-taught mixed media artist whose evocative visual language bridges cosmic symbolism, post-impressionist influence, and metaphysical inquiry. Raised in the rural South, Hayes developed an early sensitivity to nature’s spiritual dimensions and the quiet mysteries embedded in the land. Without formal academic training, he forged his own creative path, experimenting across materials and techniques until he arrived at a distinct visual vocabulary rooted in both personal vision and collective myth.
Working primarily in mixed media on canvas, Hayes creates dreamlike landscapes where natural beauty collides with enigmatic geometries, most notably, a recurring monolithic black pyramid. His art reflects a lifelong fascination with the sacred, the unknown, and the fragile tension between the earthly and the otherworldly. Now based in South Carolina, Hayes continues to explore themes of cosmic arrival, silent witnesses, and spiritual resilience through symbol-rich, textured compositions.
